Looking ahead, the sector is preparing for a significant change in regulations concerning small plug-in solar systems, set to take effect on August 27, 2026. These new provisions will enable approved microgenerators to connect through a standard UK plug and household socket, supplying no more than 800 watts of alternating current. To qualify, equipment must meet Interim Product Specification version 2 and operate safely in conjunction with the local electricity grid.
New standards clarify accepted plug-in systems
The legislative updates refine existing safety regulations pertaining to plugs, sockets, and electrical systems. The statutory instrument was delivered to Parliament on July 17, just one day after ministers approved it. This measure introduces a specific exception for qualifying generators using standard household connections, requiring a notified body to verify that each plug conforms to the BS 1363 standards. The safety amendment applies across England, Wales, and Scotland, while the product approval rules extend throughout the entire UK market.
The interim standard stipulates requirements regarding electrical design, mounting, fire safety, labeling, and consumer instructions, in addition to safe disconnection procedures and limits on electricity exported into household circuits. A technical study tested representative systems on domestic wiring under controlled conditions, demonstrating that these devices operated safely without causing sustained unsafe energization. The research also identified variations in product quality, including export controls and electromagnetic compatibility, which helped shape the final specifications.
Consultation feedback influences retail product rollout
During the public consultation process on plug-in solar, the government received 466 responses, with over 85% supporting the interim specification. Most comments also endorsed the proposed plug-in amendments. The consultation involved installers, manufacturers, network operators, technical experts, and members of the public, some of whom expressed concerns about older wiring and products being sold without proper approval. Others called for clearer guidance to distinguish between plug-in solar panels and plug-in battery systems, which are not included in the new framework.
Preparations for retail deployment are ongoing ahead of the August implementation date, with major suppliers engaged in discussions regarding compliant products. The new rules are designed for small systems suitable for balconies, gardens, and other outdoor spaces, but do not cover plug-in batteries or devices that store imported household electricity. Systems using this new connection method will not be legally operable before August 27, and only approved products within the 800-watt limit will be permitted to connect via standard household sockets after that date.
