This opt-in functionality captures signed sensor data at the moment an image is taken in Reference mode, which Private Cloud Compute processes into a reference image that can be compared within the Photos app. Apple intends to expand support for the SynthID standard through a software update later this year. Metadata embedded in images will serve as another method to detect AI-generated or edited content.
Variable aperture enhances control for photographers
The A20 Pro chip, fabricated using a 2-nanometer process, combines a six-core CPU with a seven-core GPU, which Apple claims can perform up to 40% faster than the A19 Pro. The chip also features a Dual 16-core Neural Engine with 32 cores dedicated to AI processing. Its new thermal design places the processor closer to a larger vapor chamber, enabling the system to deliver up to 40% higher sustained performance compared to the previous generation.
Battery capacity has also increased, especially for models that operate solely with eSIM. Apple estimates the iPhone 18 Pro can support up to 36 hours of video playback, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max can last as long as 45 hours under the same conditions. The Pro models can reach 50% charge in approximately 15 minutes when using compatible wired chargers. Markets including Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE will see eSIM-only versions, along with several other countries outside the region.
iOS 27 introduces Siri AI integration to the new Pro series
Running on iOS 27, the iPhone 18 Pro series supports the latest Apple Intelligence features, with Siri AI entering beta on September 14 for supported devices configured to English. Apple has plans to add support for French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish in October. The virtual assistant can utilize information from messages, emails, and photos when users seek assistance, respond to on-screen content, and integrate with the Camera app. Apple Intelligence combines on-device processing with Private Cloud Compute to handle supported cloud-based tasks.
Both models will be available in colors such as burgundy, glacier, silver, and black, with storage options ranging from 256GB to 2TB. The starting price for the iPhone 18 Pro is $1,199 in the United States, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max begins at $1,299. Preorders will start at 5 a.m. Pacific Time on September 12, with retail sales beginning on September 18 in the initial markets.
