The provisional figure was announced on September 7, with reserves having been $56.2939 billion at the conclusion of July. This monthly growth amounts to approximately $920.6 million, or a 1.6% increase, marking the first occasion that Egypt’s official reserve holdings have surpassed the $57 billion threshold.

The August figure continues a pattern of consistent growth observed throughout 2026. Reserves began the year at $52.5938 billion in January, rising month-by-month to $52.7455 billion in February and then to $52.8306 billion in March. The upward trend persisted with $53.0092 billion in April and $53.1342 billion in May. By August, reserves had increased by about $4.62 billion from January and roughly $5.76 billion from the end of December 2025.
Mid-year growth accelerated notably, with reserves climbing from $53.1342 billion in May to $55.0723 billion in June, then further to $56.2939 billion in July before hitting the new peak in August. These three consecutive monthly gains contributed over $4 billion to the total reserve figure. Compared to August 2025, this latest reserve level is approximately $7.96 billion higher, reflecting an annual growth rate of roughly 16.2%.
Remittance inflows bolster foreign currency reserves
During the 2025/2026 fiscal year, remittances sent by Egyptians working abroad reached a record high, with the Central Bank of Egypt reporting total inflows of about $47.3 billion. This represents a significant increase compared to roughly $36.5 billion in the previous fiscal year, amounting to a 29.6% rise. Remittances in June alone were approximately $4.2 billion, which is 15.6% higher than the roughly $3.6 billion recorded in June 2025.
Egypt’s latest balance of payments data cover the initial nine months of the fiscal year 2025/2026. The overall balance shows a deficit of $1.8 billion from July to March, while the capital and financial account experienced net inflows totaling $9.9 billion. Meanwhile, the current account registered a deficit of $14.6 billion. These figures offer the most recent official insights into Egypt’s external financial position before the August reserve figures were released.
Reserves hit consecutive monthly highs in 2026
The series of reserve figures has achieved successive nominal records throughout the year, crossing $55 billion in June, then surpassing $56 billion in July, with August marking the first month-end reading above $57 billion. Egypt now reports three straight months of reserve totals exceeding $55 billion, with the August figure more than 10% higher than the $51.4516 billion recorded at the end of December 2025.
These latest data position Egypt’s net international reserves at their highest ever reported level and continue an unbroken monthly increase since the beginning of 2026. From January through August, each month’s reserve total was higher than the previous one. Although the August figure remains provisional according to the central bank’s reporting standards, the published data clearly indicate a steady rise in Egypt’s reserve stock across the first eight months of the year.
